The USDOT and FMCSA does not require a minimum hours of Behind the Wheel time for commercial drivers prior to initial licensure. They require completion and demonstration of several skills.
Our internal policies require a minimum of hours as follows:
Class A CDL (Truck Driving) - 8 hours of Behind the Wheel time.
Class B CDL (Truck Driving) - 8 hours of Behind the Wheel time.
Class B CDL - Bus Endorsement (Passenger Driving) - 8 hours of Behind the Wheel time.
Please note, these are minimums. In our experience the bigger the truck, the heavier the load and the higher the level of licensure, the more Behind the Wheel time is necessary. We offer a TDT Supplied Vehicle for Behind the Wheel Training. We can also use a Student Supplied Vehicle. Please visit our FAQ under "Vehicles for Training" article for more information.
We strongly encourage students to consider doing up to 16 hours of behind the wheel training. Our instructors reserve the right to require additional time prior to completing the paperwork necessary for state CDL licensure.
TDT offers individual training that meets and often exceeds the minimum number of hours. Your success is our success. We offer the Behind the Wheel in an individual format and small group format. Often our practice driving includes hauling actual materials (non hazardous of course) or loads of items for area freight brokers and businesses.
Visit our FAQ page about the Classroom Theory if you need more information regarding the classroom part of the training.
